Work Breakdown Structure

Project Leadership

The capacity to lead and govern a project including the ability of the project sponsor to sell the project to your organization and to overcome resistance to change. This includes some awkwardly worded skills such as "ensuring project success" that are high level executive talents.

Project Management

Project management skills include specific skills aligned to a project approach or methodology such as creating a work breakdown structure. Project managers also require well-developed soft skills such as influencing. It also helps to have some depth of experience managing projects to preempt the various ways projects can go off the rails. This is captured with skills such as "scope management" and "stakeholder engagement" whereby a project manager seeks to control scope, manage stakeholder expectations and work with agents of change to move things forward.

Project Analysis

The systematic analysis skills required to develop project artifacts such as estimates or return on investment forecasts.

Organizational Skills

General organizational skills such as planning a project kick-off event or managing project meetings.

Team Skills

Team skills that apply to all project contributors such as cross-functional collaboration and problem solving.

Technical Skills

A few basic technical skills are listed that mostly apply to IT projects. All projects typically require basic technical proficiency such as using collaboration and communication tools.

Quality Management

The skills required to deliver the quality assurance and quality control processes for a project such as developing a quality plan and test cases.
