What is Analysis?

The word analysis ultimately originates from the Ancient Greek analuein that can be directly translated "unloosen." Its literal meaning is to break up the complex into the simple in order to find meaning.
Definition of Analysis
A systematic investigation into the structure and parts of something complex.
In practice, the word analysis is applied to any disciplined and structured inquiry, research, planning, problem solving or decision modeling.

Qualitative vs Quantitative Analysis

Qualitative analysis is a systematic inquiry that isn't based on numbers but rather other types of information such as first hand accounts, descriptions, knowledge artifacts, cultural artifacts or media content. For example, market analysis that looks at verbal customer feedback to see why customers are canceling a service.
Quantitative analysis looks at measurements and data such as looking at the percentage of customers that canceled a service, how this number is trending and how it compares to past results.

Data Analysis vs Statistics

Data analysis is a broad term that can include looking at qualitative data such as social media posts. Where data analysis is quantitative, this can be based on either regular math such as percentages or statistics.
Statistics is the branch of mathematics that looks at the analysis, interpretation, presentation and organization of data with a particular focus on how to quantify uncertainty and variability to draw inferences and to make predictions. This is essentially a more advanced mode of quantitative data analysis.
