90 Types of Project Analysis

 , updated on
Project analysis is any analysis that goes into the deliverables required by a project. This includes analysis used to conceptualize, initiate, plan, implement, govern and close a project. Project analysis can include areas such as scope, schedule, budget, payback, risk, quality and project performance. It can also include analysis that directly relates to products such as a design or architecture deliverable. The following are common types of project analysis.

Initiation & Planning

Analysis used in the concept phase of a project to define it such as a SWOT analysis or feasibility study. This is followed by a business case, project charter and related analysis in the initiation phase. From here the project enters the planning phrase with a project plan and related analysis such as the development of estimates.

Risk Analysis

The analysis required to identify, assess, manage, monitor and report project risk. This includes key artifacts such as a risk matrix that estimates the probability and impact of each identified risk. It is common to track all risk information for a project in a tool or document known as a risk register.

Quality Analysis

Analysis that goes into the quality planning, quality assurance and quality control processes required to deliver a project. This includes the development of test cases and the reporting of defects and quality metrics.

Implementation Analysis

The analysis required to deliver a project including artifacts related to the product itself such as a system analysis, design or a construction plan. Implementation phase analysis also includes ongoing work to manage, monitor and govern the project such as analysis related to ongoing change requests.

Performance Analysis

Analysis required to monitor, report and govern project performance in areas such as cost variance, schedule variance, quality and benefits realization. This typically includes weekly reporting and a post-project evaluation such as a lessons learned analysis.
