What is a Release Candidate?

 , updated on
A release candidate is a product, service, process or document that is undergoing testing and review in the hopes of releasing it to customers or internal clients.
Release cycles often include an early phase of testing known as alpha in which a product is stable enough to undergo acceptance testing but significant bugs are still anticipated. This may progress to a beta phase that has usable features but is still expected to be somewhat unstable. At the end of beta testing, a release may be made to customers or a limited set of customers without warranty and with the explicit warning that a release is beta.
A release candidate typically includes anything that is potentially shippable to customers, including beta releases. Some organizations may not consider beta launches to be true releases. In such cases, a term such as beta candidate may be used.
