What is Smoke Testing?

Smoke testing is a basic confirmation that a change is working well enough to begin acceptance testing. In many cases, this confirms that a release to an environment such as development, testing or user acceptance testing has been successful.
A smoke test includes a minimal set of test cases that simply confirm that a release is fundamentally working. For example, signing on and checking that a few new pages appear to be functional. It is common for developers performing a build to conduct the smoke test.
The value of a smoke test is that it avoids the embarrassing and time consuming process of telling users that a build is ready when it has some fundamental problem. The term extends from early product development tests that turn on an electronic device for the first time in the hopes that it will not begin smoking and catch on fire.
