A personal life are elements of the human experience that are freely chosen by an individual. This can be contrasted with an individual's role in society such as a professional or student who is constrained by the expectations of their occupation. The following are common elements of personal life.

While personal life is specifically contrasted with professional life, it is common to have friends at work that are part of your personal life.Social LifeElements of your personal life that involve social interaction. Personal life isn't necessarily social. That is to say that things like your morning routine or hobbies that you pursue on your own are also parts of your personal life.Leisure & RecreationLeisure is any activity that you pursue for enjoyment including passive activities such as watching a film. Recreation is leisure that is physical and/or mentally active such as jogging or playing chess.HobbiesHobbies are personal interests that you take more seriously than leisure such that you make an effort to learn or acquire new talents. For example, if you casually try surfing on vacation, that's not a hobby until you pursue the sport somewhat seriously and try to improve.LifestyleLifestyle is your way of living your life. This includes your working life but is mostly about your personal life where you have choices for how to spend your time and shape your living environment.Personal DevelopmentInitiatives and long term routines that you take on as a form of self-improvement or self-fulfillment. This includes pursuits that you feel are building you up or adding to your sense of life achievement.Community LifeEngaging with life, culture and people where you live. This can include any memberships that you have in the community such as belonging to a school, religious congregation or gym. Community life also involves engaging with local culture. For example, becoming a fan of local sports teams or participating in a local festival. In some cultures, community life is valued over the individual freedom associated with the term personal life. This is also true of historical cultures whereby work and community life consumed most or all resources, particularly time.SummaryPersonal life are elements of your life that you freely choose. Anything that isn't voluntary isn't considered personal life. For example, time spent in a hospital due to an injury.
