Information Assurance vs Information Security

 , updated on
Information assurance, or IA, is the practice of managing information related risks.
Information security, or InfoSec, is the practice of defending information and information systems from unauthorized disclosure, use, modification, disruption or destruction.

Information Assurance vs Information Security

Information assurance is the management of information related risks including areas such as compliance, business continuity, privacy, non-reputation, data quality, operational efficiency and information security. This is a broad mission and it is common for IA teams to involve mostly high level initiatives. It is also common for IA to focus mostly on information security, business continuity and compliance.
Information security has a more narrow scope related to defending information and information systems from information security threats. Information assurance evolved out of information security as a more comprehensive practice of managing information risks beyond the technical details of securing information and systems.
