What is an Organizational Unit? John Spacey, updated on
An organizational unit (OU) is a way of granting authority in systems such as a directory service. This essentially acts as a container for people and digital entities to be granted a set of privileges. Organizational units can be subsidiaries, departments, teams, projects, geographical locations, job titles, functions or a status such as contractor. They typically belong to a domain that represents the top level organization. It is also common to create a parent/child relationship between different organizational units. This allows a hierarchy such as an org chart to be reflected by systems that grant authority.
