List of 108 Professional Interests

 , updated on
Professional interests are industries, jobs, domains and types of work that an individual wishes to pursue, explore or learn about as a potential career path. This is a lifelong thing whereby students may begin to specialize in their studies in order to start to work towards a profession. Once in a job, you may continue to shape your professional interests to further specialize, expand or change your career path. The following are common professional interests.

Arts & Humanities

Professions related to human culture, tradition and history. These are mostly creative or academic careers. Some careers such as architect walk the line between humanities and science whereby they are both mathematical and steeped in culture.

Business & Administration

Business related professions including entrepreneurship and small business. When it comes to large businesses there are three flavors of roles: business, operations and administrative. Business roles are teams such as marketing and sales that generate revenue. Operations are teams such as IT that directly produce value for customers. Administrative roles such as human resources are disconnected from revenue and customers but keep a firm going.

Science & Research

Professions related to science or research including mathematics such as statistics, natural sciences such as physics, formal science such as computer science and social sciences such as economics. This can involve research or application of science to public or commercial pursuits.

Engineering & Technology

Using science to create technologically advanced things. This includes the engineering of real world things such as bridges and information technology such as video games. Engineering and technology professions include a myriad of specializations and generalist positions such as managers and architects.

Health & Medical

Health and medical professions including clinical care providers such as doctors, diagnostic specialists such as radiologists, therapeutic specialists such as physical therapists, mental health professionals such as psychiatrists and other areas such as dentistry.

Other

Other professional areas beyond the lists above. This includes broad industries such as hospitality and types of jobs such as trades. Some people may also consider whether they want to work for a business, government, non-profit or pursue their own business.

Personal Interests

Your general personality and interests in life such as topics you have researched or hobbies you have pursued can be a source of professional interests. For example, if you enjoy coin collecting including carefully preserving, organizing and researching each coin this may indicate an interest in similar careers such as museum curator.
