Active users is the total number of people who use a service in a period of time. It has a tendency to be a vanity metric as it can produce a large number that doesn't necessarily translate to revenue. The following are common types of active user metric.
Daily Active Users (DAU)The number of unique users in a day.Monthly Active Users (MAU)The number of unique users in a calendar month or trailing 30 day period.Weekly Active Users (WAU)The number of unique users in any 7 day period.Engaged UsersActive users is typically calculated with a generous definition of the term "active" that includes any interaction at all with a website, game, software platform or service. As such, it is common to define business specific metrics based on more meaningful levels of engagement. For example, a game might define engaged users as a unique user who actually plays the game for 30 seconds or longer. This avoids counting low value interactions such as bounces.|
