Swarm intelligence is the collective behavior of self-organizing entities such as ants in an ant colony. The term tends to be applied to small entities that each act independently in ways that result in collective intelligence. Swarm intelligence is widely found in nature and has inspired fields of artificial intelligence such as swarm robotics.
The emphasis of swarm artificial intelligence is typically to build small, inexpensive units that interact with each other and their local environment in a way that creates collective intelligence without any need of a central controller. This results in highly scalable designs with a broad range of applications such as manufacturing, mining or rescue operations. |
