A superintelligence is a theoretical agent that possesses intelligence that far exceeds the most intelligent humans. The term implies intelligence that exceeds humans in a comprehensive way as opposed to a single ability such as mathematics and logic. As such, a superintelligence would likely have abilities such as consciousness, intentionality, emotional intelligence, self awareness, imagination, creativity, problem solving and rational thought.
The term superintelligence often comes up in relation to the possibility of a great leap forward in artificial intelligence. There is some debate as to whether such a leap is possible or if machines are fundamentally capable of advanced thought processes such as intentionality. |
