A pervasive game is a game that uses real world locations in game play. For example, people may interact with virtual game characters in real world locations using a mobile device. In many cases, pervasive games are multi-player games that may involve physically meeting to complete game stages. It's also possible to randomly run into other players who are on a similar pursuit in the real world.
Augmented reality is a common feature of pervasive games whereby the real world is integrated in some way with game elements. Pervasive games typically utilize player location information from GPS and may also include near field sensor functions. For example, a mobile device may shake when you approach other players in the real world. In some cases, pervasive games have been criticized as dangerous or annoying as they encourage distracted use of mobile devices in public spaces. Other observers have praised them for encouraging video game enthusiasts to venture into the real world.
