A blockhead is a computer program that simulates artificial intelligence by looking things up in a data repository. It applies to technology products that claim to be artificial intelligence that are designed much like a traditional computer program.
The term blockhead began as a thought experiment that questions the difference between artificial intelligence and regular computer programs. The thought experiment states that a simple program with a large database of questions and appropriate responses could pass the turing test. The turing test is a way to define artificial intelligence as a program that can carry on a conversation with a person that convinces the person that they're talking to a human.
In theory, many of the tasks performed by artificial intelligence can be achieved by a blockhead with a sufficiently informative database.
