What is Data Escrow?

Data escrow is the practice of storing data with a neutral third party that is released to rightful owners upon certain conditions. The practice applies to custodians of data such as service providers or internet domain registrars. A data escrow service takes deposits of data on a regular basis. This has several benefits:


Data escrow assures the customer that data is backup in an independent location.


In some cases, a vendor may hold a customer's data as a bargaining chip in a commercial dispute. In this case, the data escrow service provides an alternative route for liberating data. The ability to do this depends on the structure of the contracts involved.


Liberating data from a service that fails to meet certain obligations such as obtaining licenses and certifications.

Service Failure
