Augmented Reality vs Augmented Virtuality

 , updated on
Augmented reality is the live blending of information technology and media with real world environments.
Augmented virtuality is the realtime representation of the current state of real world elements in media and information technology environments.

Augmented Reality vs Augmented Virtuality

Both augmented reality and augmented virtuality blend representations of virtual and real world elements together in a single user interface. Both represent the current state of real world environments as opposed to a static or historical state.
The difference between the two terms comes down to where the user interaction takes place. If the interaction happens in the real world, it is augmented reality. If the interaction occurs in a virtual space, it is considered augmented virtuality.

Example

Augmented reality occurs in the real world. A game that is played in a park with virtual characters appearing alongside the live view of the park is considered augmented reality.
Augmented virtuality occurs in a virtual environment. An aircraft maintenance engineer who is able to visualize a real time model of an engine in flight is an example of augmented virtuality as it occurs on a computer screen with real world elements that are physically thousands of kilometers away.

Notes

Augmented reality is a far more common term. As such, augmented virtuality is commonly referred to as augmented reality.
