What is the Uncanny Valley?

 , updated on
The uncanny valley is the tendency for robots or mannequins that look too human to trigger a sense of revulsion amongst people.

Robotics

It is often assumed by science fiction that future robots will look much like humans. This assumption isn't the only possibility as robots may develop their own aesthetics or may be integrated into environments. For example, a vehicle that is technically a robot but is shaped for factors such as aerodynamic efficiency.

Mannequins

Mannequins that look too human are notoriously difficult to get right as they often end up looking cheap or unappealing. As such, it is common for mannequins to have few facial features or to be headless.
