18 Examples of Work Creativity

 ,
Work creativity is the ability to develop non-obvious and valuable work products. This can be contrasted with the common tendency to defend the status quo, to mindlessly cling to best practices or to copy trends such that you rely on others to lead the way in your profession or industry. The following are illustrative examples of work creativity.
A carpenter redesigns their work process to make it safer.
A chief executive officer develops a new business model that transforms an industry.
A costume designer / artist adopts a new material to meet the needs of a film.
A craftsperson develops a new method that refines their work.
A customer service representative often comes up with an inventive way to solve intractable problems for the customer.
A designer develops a product that is 6x more usable than anything else on the market.
A doctor considers the unique symptoms, lifestyle and health history of a patient to diagnosis a condition missed by other doctors.
A manager develops the talent in an employee that others have dismissed as incompetent due to their poor communication skills.
A network security expert develops an architecture that is far more secure than the prevailing best practice.
A pastry chef pairs two flavors that were thought to clash to create a popular new dessert.
A politician crafts a proposal that will serve their constituents while also being appealing to the political opposition such that it has a good chance to be accepted and implemented.
A researcher develops a thought experiment that eventually leads to a major discovery.
A salesperson thinks about the character of each customer and adapts their style and approach to each individual.
A teacher develops a new activity that helps kids to grasp a difficult concept.
A writer develops a twist in a story that delights readers / audiences.
An administrator finds a way to get buggy software to work so that they can complete a task.
An architect develops uniquely resilient buildings using mostly natural materials that are unusually safe in a disaster such as an earthquake.
An entrepreneur ignores the conventions of their industry because they see a new way to better serve customers.

Notes

In order to be creative, a work product must be both nonobvious and valuable. The latter tends to be the more challenging part of creativity as it is arbitrarily easy to think of nonobvious ideas that aren't useful to a problem. For example, a chef could easily think of unconventional recipes but few of these would actually be tasty or succeed in boosting their reputation or business.
Creativity can be applied by anyone at anytime to solve a problem and is not confined to so-called creative professions such as visual design.
