A creative process is an approach to producing things are are new and original. This can apply to areas such as design, communications, media and innovation that require fresh ideas to inspire customers or solve problems. The following are common types of creative processes.

Research

Discovering and developing knowledge.

Problem Space

Defining your goals and objectives.

Preserving Ambiguity

Avoiding assumptions early in the creative process. For example, a problem space that makes no assumptions about the solution.

Constraints

Imposing constraints such as a creative vision. Well-defined constraints may stimulate creativity.

Brainstorming

Allowing a large number of ideas to flow out without validation.

Incubation

Allowing time for ideas to come to you. For example, going for a walk when you are stuck.

Divergent Thinking

Exploring ideas and challenging conventional thinking.

Convergent Thinking

Finding the "right" answer to a problem. For example, finding a design that meets a requirement.

Abstraction

Thinking about things in general as opposed to specific terms.

First Principles

Thinking about things in terms of basic principles that you hold to be true.

Thought Experiment

Developing analogies to simplify complex problems.

Idea Screening

Evaluating early stage ideas with a realistic or pessimistic viewpoint. Most creative processes generate a large number of ideas and then eliminate a large number of ideas such that few remain.

Experiments

Quickly and cheaply testing ideas.

Concept Testing

Testing high level ideas such as a creative vision.

Proof of Concept

Developing artifacts for more detailed testing of a concept. For example, developing a poster for a brand concept that you can put in front of a target market.

Prototypes

Building a prototype of a design or solution. For example, a prototype of a new product design that can be used in a variety of tests.

Creative Feedback

Asking for feedback. For example, a product development team that asks lead users for feedback based on ideas, concepts and prototypes.

Creative Control

Assigning creative control to a single person such as a creative director to avoid design by committee.

Charrette

An intensive period of team work before a deadline. Commonly used to describe the effort involved in finishing a creative work product.
