Brown goods are durable consumer goods that aren't mechanical. This can be contrasted with white goods such as washing machines, dryers, air conditioners, ovens, microwaves and refrigerators that have mechanical elements. This term stems from the historical tendency for appliances placed in the kitchen, bathroom and outdoors to be white while products designed for the living room, bedroom or recreation room were often brown. The following are common examples of brown goods.
