What is the Abilene Paradox? John Spacey, updated on
The abilene paradox is the observation that groups may make collective decisions that are viewed as sub-optimal, wrong or irrational by each individual member of the group. In many cases, independent 3rd parties can confirm that the decision is of poor quality.
The cause of the abilene paradox may be rooted in the tendency for team decisions to reflect the social dynamics of the group. Group decisions are often made through a series of compromises that may result in poor quality decisions being accepted.
