What is Human Readable?

 , updated on
Human readable is a term for data that can be interpreted by people. In theory, a human can understand anything that a machine can understand. For example, a human could understand machine code that is used by computers to execute software. The term human readable implies information that has meaning to people and that can be comprehended quickly. The following are common types of human readable information.

Visualization

Visualizations of information that are designed to be interpreted by people such as a graph or map.

Natural Language

Human readable information typically includes numbers and symbols from a language that people use such as English, French or Japanese. Symbols not from a language aren't generally unreadable. Exceptions to this rule exist, such as smileys and icons that serve as visualizations.

Complexity & Abstraction

Data that is summarized or abstracted to an appropriate level for human comprehension. For example, a pilot of an aircraft can't read the thousands of commands and data readings that flow between aircraft systems in real time. She requires abstracted information, such as an alert if something is wrong.
