What is Tolerance For Disagreement?

 , updated on
What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly - that is the first law of nature.
~ Voltaire
Tolerance for disagreement is the ability to engage in communication with people who have a different opinion or worldview from your own without becoming emotional. Individuals who have a strong tolerance for disagreement will often support a person's right to express their ideas, even if they strongly disagree with them. They may view a lively debate as a positive experience as opposed to a stressful or traumatic ordeal.

Hiding from Ideas

Individuals may become emotional when confronted with ideas that conflict with their worldview. As such, it is common for people to seek safe places for themselves and their children away from ideas they consider controversial or wrong. For example, private high schools, colleges and universities may offer an environment away from ideas that might potentially upset someone. Alternatively, schools may be associated with a religion or have a strong political disposition.
Individuals may also use digital tools to hide from ideas with which they disagree. For example, the nature of the internet allows people to develop social networks and media streams that align with their worldview.
