Humility is the realization that you play a relatively small role in things such that you depend on others. The opposite can be described as arrogance whereby you overestimate your own talents, control and contributions. Humility is a virtue that helps an individual to experience gratitude for what they have been given and appreciate the contributions of others. As such, the extreme opposite can be described as narcissism whereby you vastly overestimate your own talents and mistreat others as a means of defending this inflated self-image. The following are common antonyms of humility.
Arrogant | Boastful | Cocky | Complacent | Conceited | Contemptuous | Egotistical | Grand | Lofty | Narcissistic | Overbearing | Pompous | Presumptuous | Pretentious | Proud | Self-absorbed | Self-centered | Self-important | Self-obsessed | Self-satisfied | Selfish | Shameless | Showy | Smug | Stuck-up | Supercilious | Vain | Virtue Signalling |
NotesSome cultures or individuals may respect relentless self-promotion and overconfidence such that humility is viewed as a fault. In this case, antonyms are positive words such as confidence. A lack of humility often resembles complacency whereby an individual is too easily satisfied with themselves and can't handle the critical feedback that would help them improve. This may be the core reason that humility is a common trait amongst people who have achieved great things.
