Skills Section of a Resume

It is common to list skills in separate section of a resume. This list is often categorized and kept as compact as possible without meaningless information such as a progress bar. The skills section is ancillary and is often placed at the bottom of a resume.
The skills section of your resume allows employers to quickly scan for a skill that is a requirement of a job. As such, listing standard skills in a standard way is the norm. You could try to list skills that are unique to you but really people just use this section to verify that you match the requirements of a job. Anyone who is trying to understand your talents and personality will likely focus on the top of your resume.

Hard Skills vs Soft Skills

Hard skills are abilities that are relatively easy to evaluate such as coding skills. Soft skills are abilities that are critical to jobs but are difficult to evaluate such as collaborative skills. Generally speaking, hard skills are more relevant to the skills section of a resume because an employer may be able to validate that you have these skills in an interview. Listing a few soft skills is good but listing dozens of them might not feel right on a resume. Soft skills are difficult to validate but are super valuable so it's really easy to claim that you have them.

Be Prepared for Questions

It is tempting to list everything the employer is asking for in your skills section or to list trendy skills such as cutting edge technologies. Be prepared for several levels of follow up questions for each skill. In many cases, your interviewer will know some of the skills you list at great depth and will easily be able to detect any exaggerations.

Alternatives

If you have impressive work experience, educational qualifications, publications, patents, industry certifications and professional connections you may drop the skills section as these things may indicate the requisite skills. For example, if you are certified on a cloud platform you may emphasize this certification over listing all the technologies involved.

Summary

Resume skills are skills that are relevant to potential employers. These are often stated in a standard way and are initially used to confirm that a candidate qualifies for a job. Later, employers may go into a great depth of questions on one or two of these skills to confirm the knowledge.
