Professional Skills

Professional skills are commonly listed in job descriptions, resumes and in other artifacts such as performance reviews. They are so often listed that they get standardized to phrases that can begin to sound cliche. This is particularly true of soft skills whereby phrases such as active listening are overused to the extent they feel kinda empty. If you are working on a job description there is a choice -- use fresh and original phrasing or use the standard term. The skills above mostly use standard phrasing but it is possible to state them in your own way. For example, "engaging with people to truly listen."

Communication

Communication is the basis for all social processes including education, work and social life. This includes verbal, non-verbal, written and visual communication in both formal and informal situations. There are vast differences in communication skills from one person to the next -- these are deep talents that are difficult to master. For example, a lot of people have a skill such as public speaking but few will really take this all the way to become a great speaker.

Design & Media

Media and design skills are increasingly applicable to most pursuits in life whereby problems are often solved with design in every domain. Likewise, media skills are broadly applicable to most jobs or academic programs whereby we increasingly communicate using media.

Technical Skills

Technical skills have three levels -- architects that design technology, developers who implement it and users that use it. As technology becomes more advanced people tend to be pushed up this ladder whereby more people are designing technology as opposed to merely using it.

Soft Skills

Soft skills are valuable abilities such as leadership that are difficult to measure or transfer between people. These are skills that are cultivated with experience and often stem from a natural talent.

Life Skills

Skills that are broadly applicable to life such as the ability to bounce back from failure without loss of enthusiasm. Life skills include low level skills such as literacy and high level skills such as emotional maturity.

Academic Skills

Skills that are applicable to education and learning in general. This includes the ability to acquire knowledge, conduct research and create academic artifacts such as a research paper, essay or writing an exam.

Social Skills

Social situations, relationships and institutions are arguably the most complex things that most people will deal with in their life such that social skills can be difficult to master. For example, navigating office politics to get things done.
