Embrace, extend and extinguish is an ethically dubious strategy for eliminating a open standard or technology that involves adopting it and then extending it in proprietary ways. By extending an open standard such as HTML with proprietary standards it makes it difficult for competing companies to use the standard. For example, if a browser includes proprietary tags and functionality that are adopted by web designers, such pages might not function properly in competing browsers.
