8 Examples of Academic Freedom

 ,
Academic freedom is the principle that academics, scholars, researchers and students have a right to engage in free inquiry, to express their ideas and to publish their findings without fear of censorship or retribution. This is related to general constitutional rights and freedoms, particularly freedom of speech. The following are examples of academic freedom.
Freedom of association
Freedom of expression
Freedom of learning
Freedom of publication
Freedom of research
Freedom of speech
Freedom of teaching
Freedom of thought and inquiry
Academic freedom can be contentious where it is perceived that teaching or public resources are being geared towards some political agenda. Using an academic position to promote a political viewpoint may not be protected. For example, the 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure of the American Association of University Professors states: "Teachers are entitled to freedom in the classroom in discussing their subject, but they should be careful not to introduce into their teaching controversial matter which has no relation to their subject."
Academic tenure is a type of academic position that has high job security whereby there are limited conditions under which employment can be ended. This is viewed as supporting academic freedom.
