SWOT analysis is a strategy planning technique that involves analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats relative to a goal. It typically begins as a brainstorming session that populates a 2x2 grid according the SWOT criteria:
Strengths
Your competitive advantages for a given goal.
Weaknesses
A candid evaluation of your competitive disadvantages.
Opportunities
Strategies and tactics that might work.
Threats
Risks and competitive forces such as the strengths of your competition.
SWOT analysis can be used to plan strategies for organizations, teams, products, services, projects or individuals. They are specific to strategy planning for a particular goal. In other words, strengths and weaknesses are considered relative to the challenge being considered.
