Communication values are principles that an organization, team or individual adopts in order to guide communication. These can be related to questions of right and wrong such as the principle that communication be honest. Communication values can also relate to your communication goals. For example, a salesperson who adopts the principle that they are candid and direct with customers as a means to establish credibility and ultimately close more sales and build stronger customer relationships. The following are common examples of communication values.

Communication Ethics

Principles that relate to questions of right and wrong in your communications. This includes specific values such as confidentiality that calls for protection of non-public information and more general principles such as compassion that calls for empathy towards people in communication.

Values related to interactions and relationships between people. Professional Communication

Standards for professional communication such as taking ownership and accountability for issues on behalf of your organization. These are particularly focused on communication with stakeholders such as customers, investors and regulators.

Personal Communication

Values adopted by an individual to guide their communication with others. This can include general principles for effective communication such as tact whereby you try not to offend others. Personal communication values can also be an effort to shape your character and social presence with principles such as kindness, understanding and forgiveness.

Team Communication

Communication values related to working collaboratively and cooperatively with others towards common goals. For example, the principle that you offer timely responses and feedback to other team members.

Transparency Values

Transparency is the process of giving others the information they may need. This often relates to compliance and general ethics whereby you are required or morally obligated to inform others of things that may impact them.
