What is a Forest Dieback? John Spacey, updated on
Forest dieback is when a large number of trees or an entire forest suddenly dies often without an obvious cause. Factors that may lead to forest diebacks include drought, temperature changes, pathogens, parasites or pollution such as acid rain. In many cases, a forest dieback occurs for a single species of tree across vast regions. As forests perform an important function in absorbing carbon from the atmosphere, a large scale forest dieback could trigger a tipping point in global warming.
