Differentiated services is a networking technique that grants a higher quality of service to priority traffic while serving non-priority traffic on a best effort basis. Traffic is classified according to factors such as protocol, content, media-type and source. The following are illustrative examples.
Business ClassificationA bank that prioritizes market data packets on its network.CommunicationA corporate network prioritizes communication messages such as Voice over IP (VoIP). Other traffic such as web browsing is served on a best-effort basis.SourceIn theory, a telecom company that owns media interests could prioritize delivery of its own content while making the competition comparatively slower. |
