What is a Deep Space Network?

A deep space network is a communications network for communicating and controlling missions in deep space. Deep space networks are currently operated by the United States, Europe, Russia, China, India and Japan. Systems consist of geographically distributed facilities with large antennas, ultra-sensitive receivers and powerful transmitters. Current systems are Earth based. In the future, systems may be positioned in Earth orbit or in deep space itself.
