Verbal Skills

Technically, verbal communication includes any communication with words including writing. However, people tend to think of verbal skills as relating to speaking. This includes foundational skills such as language proficiency and vocabulary. Verbal skills also include more advanced skills such as telling a story in an engaging way or using appropriate humor effectively to build rapport.

Non-Verbal Skills

The physical elements of communication such as body language, eye contact and your physical presence and energy. Perhaps the most important element of this are facial expressions that are practically a language onto themselves.

Written Communication

The ability to write everything from text messages to great literature. This includes technical elements such as grammar and expressive elements such as saying things in a compelling way.

Visual Communication

When people think of visual communication they mostly think of flat two-dimensional visuals such as a presentation slide or graph of some data. Technically speaking, visual communication also includes real life things such as fashion and digital things such as character designs for a game.

Interpersonal Skills

The ability to relate to people, build relationships and influence. Interpersonal skills also involve navigating challenging social situations such as office politics or dealing with difficult people.

Presentations

Giving presentations includes everything from presenting a few slides in a small meeting up to public speaking in front of a large audience. This is one of the high arts of communication whereby you are given the attention of an audience with freedom to communicate a message in your own style.

Listening Skills

People tend to emphasize listening skills because it is very common for people to only half listen to others. This is known as selective attention and does have a valid place whereby people are constantly flooded with information and do need to be selective with their attention. This being said, if you want to build rapport and sustain relationships with people it is helpful to listen intently and to show that you are listening.

Professional Skills

Communication is an element of every job whereby this is how you integrate with the rest of an organization. For this reason, jobs that are communication intensive such as customer service and sales positions give you valuable experience that may make you more successful in any future role. For example, an engineer who worked at the front desk of a hotel might have deeper communication skills than their peers that may make them suitable for management.

Conversational Skills

Conversations are the primary way that people communicate such that being able to talk to anyone about anything and make it interesting is a valuable skill. This includes small talk whereby you can about seemingly mundane topics such as the weather in order to acknowledge someone or to initiate conversations.

Digital Communication

Communicating with digital tools such as video conferencing or in fully digital environments such as a game.

Communication skills are abilities that allow you to express meaning to others. As practically everything that we do has some social element to it, these are foundational skills that are important to most pursuits in life.
