Sustainability is the practice of reducing or eliminating environmental impact and improving quality of life for communities. Resilience is the practice of designing things to endure physical, social and economic shocks and stresses. Resilience is primarily associated with city planning and urban design. Its goal is to give cities the structures, systems and resources that allow communities to make it through disasters or sudden change. The practice of resilience can also apply to a nation, region or organization.
Sustainability & Resilience Sustainability and resilience tend to use many of the same techniques. That is to say that many of the things that improve quality of life and reduce environmental impact also tend to make an area more resilient. For example, solar panels and energy efficiency reduce environmental impact and make a city more resilient to global energy shocks or supply chain disruptions. In terms of differences, resilience is more focused on disaster preparedness such as earthquake, tsunami and hurricane resistant architecture and infrastructure. Resilience is also associated with cities whereas sustainability is a much broader practice.|
