Service marketing is the end-to-end practice of selling services. A service is business that offers intangible value at a point in time. Services derive much of their value from things that aren't physically transferred to the customer. For example, a train is a service because the customer obtains value in the form of transport but doesn't obtain a physical product to take home from the experience. The following are examples of services that are commonly marketed.
Accounting services | Advertising | Bakeries | Banks | Barbershops & hair salons | Bike rentals | Bookstores | Cafes | Catering services | Cloud computing | Cloud software | Concerts | Construction services | Consulting | Delivery services | Dentists | Design services | Ecommerce shops | Engineering services | Event services e.g. wedding planning | Financial services | Flights | Florists | Grocery Stores | Gyms | Health and wellness services | Healthcare services | Higher education | Hotels | Industry conferences | Insurance | Landscaping | Language schools | Logistics services | Maintenance services | Marketing services | Mobile apps | Movies | Museums | Night clubs | Opticians | Payment services e.g. credit cards | Personal care services | Pet services | Pharmacies | Professional services | Public services e.g. a library | Real estate agents | Real estate rentals | Recreational facilities | Restaurants | Security services | Shops | Software services | Spas | Sports events | Streaming media services | Tax services | Technology services | Telecom services | Theme parks | Training | Travel services | Video games |
In some cases, services expire at a point in time such that service marketing may involve many levels of discounts designed to avoid wasting inventory. For example, a night in a hotel room can be viewed as inventory that expires. The process of optimizing revenue from expiring service inventory is known as revenue management.Service marketing heavily relies on customer experience for value creation. Some services have very high development costs but very low costs to scale. This makes marketing important to profitability as high volume sales are required to pay for service development. For example, a video game that is massively expensive to develop but very cheap to offer to each customer.
