What is Knowledge Velocity?

 , updated on
Knowledge velocity is the speed at which knowledge is disseminated and used. In many cases, organizational knowledge goes to waste when it is documented and then sits in a repository untouched. As such, knowledge velocity is a key goal and measurement of knowledge management practices.

As a Concept

Knowledge velocity is an aspect of organizational culture whereby some teams regularly communicate ideas, openly share knowledge, document information in a concise and consumable format and wrap it in stories. Other teams document things in cryptic formats and are hesitant to share.

As a Metric

Knowledge velocity can be calculated for a period of time by dividing the number of views by the number of documents. If you have 1 million documents and 10 million views in a year, your annual knowledge velocity is 10.
Many documents are retained for audit trail and secondary purposes and aren't meant to be intensely shared. As such, alternative knowledge velocity metrics can be developed that only count critical information. For example, important knowledge may be shared on a highly visible intranet site and the site's metrics may be used to count velocity.
