Management by absence is a management style that sets a basic direction and allows teams to follow their own course. The term is associated with executive managers who are valued for their ideas, designs, ability to generate publicity or political connections as opposed to their ability to understand and control business functions. In some cases, executive managers who have significant personal presence and vision have no interest in details such as finance, operations and technology. As all executive positions in a company are traditionally "management", such individuals may be referred to as managers when they are really leaders, designers, product visionaries or figureheads. This can lead to legal and ethical complications. For example, a CEO is legally expected to understand the operations and finances of a firm. Ideally, leaders who manager by absence are given job titles that indicate no such responsibilities.
