Management functions are the value created by a management team or position. In an academic context these are often presented as four or five functions. For example, planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling is often listed as the five basic management functions. This arguably leaves out functions such as communication such that a more extensive list may be useful. The following represents an extended list of management functions.
Accountability | Analysis | Asset Management | Automation | Benchmarking | Business Processes | Communication | Compliance | | Control | Direction | Ethics & Principles | Financial Management | Forecasting & Estimates | Goal Planning | Human Resource Management | Internal Controls | Issue Clearing | Knowledge Management | Leadership | Measurement | Negotiation | Organizational Structure | Organizing | Performance Management | Planning | Policies & Procedures | Procurement | Recruiting | Relationship Management | Reporting | Research & Development | Risk Management | Stakeholder Management | Strategy | Transparency |
NotesIt is common for academic materials to present 4-5 concepts as an overview for students. These aren't necessarily mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive. It could be argued that direction and control meets this criteria. For example, staffing and leadership are both direction. As such, it is accurate to say that the function of management is the direction and control of organizations.
