Deep space is a term for the Universe beyond the gravitational influence of Earth. The term is used to distinguish between the large number of space missions that involve orbiting the earth with missions that go further to investigate the solar system. For example, a deep space network is a communications network designed to communicate and track space missions beyond the Earth's orbit.

- Outer space beyond 10,000 miles, or 16,000 kilometers, from the surface of the Earth.
- Outer space beyond 2 million kilometers from the surface of the Earth.
The third definition relates to the original operational specifications of the NASA Deep Space Network. The fourth definition is related to radio frequency reservations for deep space maintained by the International Telecommunications Union.|
