The space age is a period in human history that began on October 4th, 1957 when the Soviet Union was the first to successfully launch a satellite into space. The space age continues to this day and competes with other terms such as the information age to define our time.
Space Age vs Information AgeBoth space age and information age denote a new period in human technical advancement.Space age was an extremely common term during the space race of the 1960s. For example, innovative products of the time were commonly referred to as "space age" technologies. Since the commercialization of the internet in the mid-1990s, the term information age, to denote the age of computers, has become more common. It is unclear how future historians will label the current time period. If we end up commercializing space and colonizing planets, space may be considered the more important development. If computing leads to a completely new economy and society based on advancements in areas such as artificial intelligence the term information age may win out.
