Computers are a type of machine that began to rapidly improve beginning in the 1960s resulting in the transformation of nations, industries, economies, lifestyles and cultures. The following basic definitions of computer are all technically correct but differ slightly in viewpoint and detail.
(1) A class of machine that acts on data as opposed to physical things.(2) Machines that process meaning represented as symbols.(3) General purpose devices for performing calculations and operations on data.(4) Programmable machines for storing, processing and calculating data.(5) High speed machines designed to process complex sets of commands to produce knowledge, entertainment, media, communication, automation, calculations, control systems, robotics and other advanced machine functionalities.
(6) Machines that process, store and calculate data represented in binary as a series of 0s and 1s.(7) General-purpose programmable machines that store, process and calculate meaning represented as signals or symbols.
