Small Business Definition

 , April 28, 2016
A small business is typically defined as a business with less than 50 employees. In some jurisdictions, a business with up to 250 employees is considered small. In many areas, a business that qualifies as small in terms of revenue and employees is granted special assistance, tax treatment and exemption from certain burdensome regulations.
A micro business is a sub-category of small business that is typically defined as 1-10 employees. In some cases, firms with a small number of employees have enough revenue to be considered a medium or large business.
Small businesses typically operate in industries that don't require economies of scale to compete. They typically employ business models such as niche products and local services that allow them to compete with far larger firms.
