What is Domestication Of Technology? John Spacey, updated on
Domestication of technology is the idea that new technologies are first shaped by governments, organizations and engineers but that with time they are domesticated and shaped by social forces. The domestication of technology can be seen in the history of computing. Computers began in the 1940s as large machines that only governments could afford. They eventually became accessible to large organizations as tools of automation in the 1960s. By the 1980s, they were widely available to households but designs were primarily driven by engineers. With time, market forces took hold and consumer preferences and behavior began to have an ever greater influence on technology design.
