12 Examples of Event Data

 , updated on
Event data is information about change that occurs at a point in time. This is commonly collected and used for automation, calculations, communication, decision making and integration. The following are illustrative examples of event data.

Analytics

A website records events such as pageviews and user actions and visualizes this data in an analytics tool. For example, a website might send an event when a user plays a video on a page.

Ecommerce

An ecommerce site issues an event when a customer puts something in their shopping card. This can trigger a variety of real time processes such as calculating suggested products for the customer.

Electronics

A camera detects when it has been dropped and prepares itself for impact.

Home Automation

A bathtub is filled to the present level. This event causes the water to stop flowing and the bathtub to glow to indicate it is ready.

Games

A character in a game jumps over a log triggering the squirrel hiding inside the log to get scared and run.

Infrastructure

A solar cell fails to perform as expected causing its solar module to report the problem to a management service.

Transport

A high speed train experiences an unusual vibration going through a tunnel. This is communicated to central control causing other trains to slow down at the same spot. It also triggers a maintenance inspection of the track that night.

Information Technology

A data storage device in a data center experiences a serious error. This triggers a complete backup of the device and its replacement by a technician.

Business Processes

An employee completes an investigation into a quality complaint. This triggers a customer service action to respond to the customer who made the complaint.

Integration

If a banking customer changes their address online this immediately triggers a notification to any systems at the bank that consume this data. For example, an account security process might consume this data and check that the new address isn't suspicious in any way.

Artificial Intelligence

A small robot vacuum cleaner has learned that a cat who gets a certain look in its eyes is about to pounce. This event causes the vacuum cleaner to stop all movement in the hopes that the cat will lose interest and go away.

Complex Event Processing

A city notices a large number of incoming emergency calls from one area of the city. A complex event processing tool decides something is going on at this location and dispatches emergency services to the area in less than a second before a single call is handled by staff.
