Urban Design: Green vs Sustainable

 , updated on
Green urbanism is the practice of designing cities to be environmentally friendly usually with the goal of zero impact in terms of waste and other factors. Sustainable urbanism typically has the same environmental goals but is equally concerned with the quality of life of residents. As such, sustainable urbanism includes goals related to the local economy, communities, neighborhoods, culture, health, safety and disaster prevention.
In terms of flavor, green urbanism tends to view cities as an ecological problem. In some cases, green urbanism is against things such as economic growth that city residents may value. Sustainable urbanism is more likely to view cities as win-win opportunities whereby urban design improves people's self reported happiness and minimizes impact to the environment. As such, sustainable design has a better chance of being embraced by city residents to make an impact.
In the field, both green urbanism and sustainable urbanism tend to leverage similar techniques.
