Personal power is the ability to exert direction and control over your own life. This also involves influencing others and achieving results in the real world. Personal power is a broad concept centered around a sense of agency, confidence, drive, resilience and a commitment to overcome obstacles. The following are examples of personal power.
Accountability | Ambition | Assertiveness | Attention to detail | Bias for action | Big picture thinking | Bouncing back from failure | Breaking through personal limitations | Calculated risk taking | Candor | Collaboration | Competitive drive | Confidence | Cooperation | Courage | Creativity | Curiosity | Decisiveness | Demanding high standards of yourself | Determination | Establishing positive habits | Establishing rapport | Facing fears | Focusing on what you can control | Goal-setting | Gratitude | Humility | Initiative | Inspiration | Introspection | Learning from failure | Mental focus | Motivation | Not easily self-satisfied | Optimism | Perseverance | Positive attitude | Pragmatism | Realism | Relationship building | Resilience | Resourcefulness | Responsibility | Self-awareness | Self-control | Self-direction | Time management | Willingness to jump-through hoops | Willpower | Work ethic |
Personal power may require strengths that are often opposing such as attention to detail and big picture thinking or optimism and realism. This can be described as cognitive flexibility whereby you are able to direct your thinking to meet the demands of the moment. If a strategy is failing, a big-picture realistic sanity check may be in order. If you are delivering work for an important customer, attention to detail may be required.
