A hierarchy is a design that classifies things into a tree-like structure with branches. This is typically done to organize large sets of things into manageable units. The opposite strategy is to keep things as flat as possible by sorting them into large units with little structure.

Function | | Definition | A classification scheme that places things into a tree structure. | Value | Grouping information, things or organizations into manageable units. | Alternatives | Hierarchy vs Flat | Tradeoffs | A hierarchy both breaks down complexity and adds complexity. That is to say, it reduces complexity by making units smaller but adds a potentially complex tree structure. In most cases, a relatively simple and flat hierarchy is preferable to a deep tree structure. | Related Concepts | |
