What is Vaporware?

 , updated on
Vaporware is an announced product or innovation that never materializes in the market without any announcement of a cancellation.
In many cases, vaporware occurs due to development challenges or a change in strategy. It is also common for vaporware to be a deliberate strategy to boost a firm's stock or to strike fear in the hearts of the competition.
As a deliberate strategy, vaporware is ethically and legally questionable as it may be seen as misleading investors and customers. It can also be viewed as anti-competitive behavior as it may cause customers of a competitor to delay purchases, awaiting a new innovation that is mythical.
Media organizations and personalities may also be criticized for dramatizing vaporware in an unquestioning fashion.
