Automation are decisions and actions that are made for users by technology. This represents a design tradeoff with control, or allowing users to direct and configure things themselves. In many cases, control can result in popular features of a product or service. Users may have requirements to configure products in a precise way or may simply enjoy playing with buttons. Control can be satisfying and engaging.
Automation allows for productivity such as clearing annoying or repetitive tasks for users. In some cases, there is little interest amongst users to control a particular function. For example, users typically don't want to be asked repetitive and partially meaningless questions such as "Are you sure?"|
| Automation | Control | Definition | Decisions and actions made by technology. | The ability for users to make decisions and perform actions using technology. | Example | An air conditioning unit that automatically decides air speed based on temperature differential and other factors. | An air conditioning unit that allows users to select air speed. | Tradeoffs | EfficientAllows for simple user interfaces. | Accounts for differences in user preferences.
May be seen as a valuable feature. |
